ET SMITH FOUNTAIN
This fountain, originally installed at the intersection of Rundle Road, Rundle Street and Dequetteville Terrace in 1877, was a gift from Lady Elizabeth Smith to honour her husband, the former Mayor of Adelaide and Kensington and Norwood.
At that time, water in the cast iron drinking fountain ran constantly from the lion’s heads on four sides into fonts, which drained into basins at ground level for dogs to drink. Rising above the fountain was a fluted pillar holding a lamp.
At some stage the fountain was moved to the Norwood Mall entrance until the Coles redevelopment began, when the NPSP Council moved it to storage.
The Kent Town Residents Association contacted the Council in 2023 requesting they rehabilitate the fountain and return it to Kent Town, in a location where the public can once again appreciate it. As a result, refurbishment works began and the fountain is now being installed at the corner of Fullarton Rd and Rundle St. Although the fountain will not be connected to a water supply due to its age, condition and the underground services at this location, KTRA is pleased that the fountain, part of the history of Kent Town, will once again be in a prominent public location. Negotiations about an opening celebration of the return of the fountain are underway, with the NPSP Council. |
